pawblu.gif (897 bytes) History of ISTAR Program

A forum for exchanging ideas was developed in the summer of 1984 by networking high schools together through principal participation.  From the interaction and ideas generated came I-STAR, which stand for Indiana Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition.  This program was formulated to enhance the two focal areas of schooling, teaching, and learning, and to honor outstanding examples of each.  Mr. James Howell, then principal at Centerville Senior High School, developed the program for our school district.

The recognition is relegated to seniors only.  Each senior in the top 10 percent of their class along with an optional ‘at large selection,” if a member school wishes to do so, is invited to complete an application.  The application form is based upon academics and activities.

Each school established a committee of adults, predominately teachers, to screen the applications down to three.  When these were determined by the committee, the principal then notified the students that they were the I-STAR recipients.

In each application, the student indicating the selection of the I-STAR teacher based upon the individual the student felt had made the most outstanding contribution to the I-STAR student’s individual and scholastic development submitted a separate page.  Any teacher between K-12 was eligible for nomination.  Besides the nomination, each student had to write why the teacher he or she selected was being so esteemed.

In establishing a format for delivery of this I-STAR recognition’s, the principals decided to have an evening program.

To make this evening as memorable as possible, each student will be presented a plaque by his principal, and the student, in turn, presents a plaque to the teacher.  Each student will address the audience on the selection of the teacher.  This proved to be a highlight of the program as both the teachers and students received complimentary feedback.

This program has added to the esteem of teachers and to students and has provided all the participating schools with an avenue to take some time to honor some special people.
